9010 IOC Blade Input Output Controller

INTRODUCTION

The 9010 is 1U high rack mounting Input Output Controller. The IOC has 6 industry pack slots each with a mini signal conditioning cards, one PMC slot and a PC104+ processor, with Ethernet network (10/100)MHz, USB, 40GB hard disc  and 512 RAM (1GB compact flash optional). As a system component it is available as an EPICS IOC running either RTEMS or LINUX, a full Vsystem node running Windows or Linux or as an OPC server . It will also support TCP/IP sockets and HTML web browser access. The functionality of the IOC is determined by industry packs fitted, these include ADC, DAC, I/O, Isolated I/O, RS232, RS485, Stepper Motor Controller and Scaler. In addition a PMC card slot provides access to the wide range of specialist cards.

DESCRIPTION

Six sites are provided for Industry Packs (IP) providing a wide range of I/O functions. Auto configuration scans the IP and PMC slots to determine the current I/O for rapid configuration. Drivers for Hytec IP cards will allow systems to be operational quickly.

Each industry pack has a Signal Conditioning Board which allows signal conditioning and plant isolation to be added. We have chosen the 50-way SCSI II connector so that inexpensive, commercially available cables can be used with Hytec’s range of DIN Rail Terminal Boards for connection to plant wiring.

Five cooling fans are fitted, all controllable remotely or locally (automatic temperature control). There are also five temperature sensors located in the IOC - each with three set point switches, the state of which can also be observed remotely.

The PMC slot may be used a master time generator, it has access to the user pins which may be patched to the I/P cards within the 9010. The PMC slot has its own fan.

SOFTWARE

The 9010 IOC Blade will support the following software / protocols to access hardware input/output.

Vsystem on Linux/Windows XP

A 9010 IOC Blade system provides a complete platform to run Vsystem applications hosted on either Linux or Windows operating environments. Hytec will provide driver support in Linux and Windows for its Industry Pack modules. Using Vsystem components such as Vaccess and Vscan, databases can be prepared to support and read in the data from the connected plant and Vsystem handlers can provide plant data output. You can also run Vsystem client components such as Vdraw, Vtrend and Vlogger locally on the 9010. A scanner for the IP packs is available from Vista Control Systems.

The Hytec IOC Blade 9010 Linux Kernel Driver can be used with Vsystem and Hytec have produced example drivers for all its IP card range. They also contain a simple examples (including source and makefiles).

Linux / EPICS
The Linux / EPICS version on booting up, will scan all the Industry Pack (IP) slots and using the ‘VITA4’ standard it will identify the cards fitted. From this scan it will set up a default start up script, which will configure the cards and set up a default EPICS database. This will allow EPICS users via straight CA (Channel Access), EDM, MEDM and other EPICS utilities to immediately access the IOC’s interfaces, without the need to configure. The user can modify the start up script via the HTML pages (see below) or directly on the Compact Flash, to more specifically configure any IP Card. The modified start up script will always take priority over the default start up script, unless there is a configuration error i.e. any IP Cards are absent or changed.

Linux / HTML
With the Linux version it is possible with a web browser, to simply enter the IP address and access a tabbed HTML page. There is a page for each Industry Pack slot together with a general configuration tab etc. The layout of the tabbed page is adjusted for each type of IP card. This will allow developers to easily configure IOCs from their default settings. Since HTML allows IP Cards’ inputs to be monitored and outputs modified, the HTML interface allows the IOC Blade to be easily used for remote testing with no client code at all.

Linux / TCP/IP
The Linux version will also support a specific TCP/IP Socket, which will accept a standard TCP/IP connection. Via this connection, simple commands (STATUS, CONFIGURE, READ, WRITE etc) will allow full access and control to the IOC Blades IP Cards. A document fully describing the protocol is available on the Hytec Electronics Ltd website. This will allow Visual Studio, Borland, Delphi, and LabView and any C++ developers to easily interface to the IOC, and produce their own control packages.

RTEMS / EPICS
The 9010 IOC Blade can be run in the same way that the more usual VxWorks IOC would be, i.e. it boots up, connects to a host and runs off a start up script. RTEMS versions of the drivers are available from the Hytec Electronics Ltd website.

Windows / OPC Server
The 9010 IOC Blade will also support OPC server running on the Windows CE operating system, and the Industry Pack (IP) cards will appear as OPC devices. Any industry SCADA systems or applications with OPC client integrated would be able to easily read/write data from/to the devices. This OPC server will be fully compliant with the most current version of the OPC specification. During the system boot, a start up program will scan the devices connected automatically and build up a basic configuration database. A configuration tool (Either a Windows application or via the web browser) will be provided should the user change the device settings or the Industry Pack (IP) cards.

INDUSTRY PACKS

Industry Packs are plug-in cards based on an industry standard format and are designed to have wide application. They are very compact, 1.8 inches by 3.9 inches in size and they include an ID PROM which aids auto-configuration. They have connectors that are keyed for ease of installation. There is a broad range of products already available from a wide selection of suppliers all over the world. EPICS, Linux and Windows component device drivers are available from Hytec.

SIGNAL CONDITIONING BOARDS

A range of mini plug-in I/O Signal Conditioning Boards are available, they route all I/O signals via rear panel mounted high density 50-way SCSI-2 sockets to the industry packs. Some boards include sites with the option of fitting R-C low-pass filters which can be selected by jumpers to be in or out of circuit. Additionally, optional plug-in 5V to +/-12V DC-DC converters can be used with some boards to facilitate powering the plant side of isolated analogue circuits.

Designed to mount on standard DIN EN 50035 or OMEGA-DIN 50022-50045 DIN rail, the terminal boards offer a simple solution to the problem of connecting plant wiring to the IOC. Wiring is terminated neatly at the terminal boards and low cost, high density SCSI-2 twisted pair cables connect to the IOC. Some boards are available with transient protection, current sources and visual data state indication (Bi-colour LEDs). PT100 and Thermocouple blocks with cold junction compensation available.
